A crown is a custom-made cover placed over a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size, and to strengthen and improve its appearance. A crown may be recommended to cover a tooth that is decayed, weakened, broken or cracked. It may also be recommended to support a tooth with a large filling or to attach a bridge.
Crowns are made of a variety of different materials such as porcelain, gold, or an “all-ceramic” resin that mimics the color of a natural tooth.
The process usually requires a minimum of two to three visits within the course of a month. Upon the completion of the procedure, it is important to observe proper dental hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing in order to maintain healthy teeth, gums and crowns that are free of bacteria. With proper care, your crowns can last a lifetime.
